Description

Huntingdonshire District Council has converted 360 of its 110 litre bins into ‘smart bins’ by fitting them with fill level sensors. The project will see a third of the councils 1,200 public bins fitted with sensors, supplied by Egbert Taylor. The sensors provide instant updates on how full each bin is and if it needs emptying. This has allowed the council to reduce the number of collections and to be more efficient on collection days.

Location

Huntingdonshire, Cambridgeshire, United Kingdom.

Potential circular economy impact

This solution provides a way for local authorities to monitor how full bins are. By having this information, the council can better manage bins collections saving time and resources. Fewer bin collections also means that less bin bags will be disposed of. This reduces the amount of plastic that will be incinerated or landfilled.

What’s involved?

People: Sensor installation crew; software team; collection team.

Resources: Bins; collection trucks.

Technology: Sensor technology: laptop or device to follow the monitoring.

Implementation: Fit the bins with the sensor; monitor the fill level during collection day to better plan which bins will be collected.
